Buyers guide-how to choose a chair
Here are some useful questions which you should ask yourself when deciding what kind of chairs you want to buy:
What is the style of the room in which the chair will go? Is it
- Contemporary
- Classic
- Dedicated space or multi functional space
If the space is to be used for a variety of functions, then perhaps a stacking chair, which can be stacked on its own dolly and moved aside, or a folding chair might be more appropriate.
What will it be used fo r?
What should it be made of?
You can choose timber chairs, or a chair made from metal or composite materials. The material of the chair you choose frequently depends on your own taste and the fitness for your setting. Chairs made with composite materials, plastic or metal tend to require less maintainance than those made of timber, but timber chairs will also last a long time provided they are properly looked after.
What about Upholstery?
Arms or no arms?
- Chairs with arms to go under the table?
- Chairs without arms

The chair
How long do you expect people to sit in it at any one time?
Some chairs are very comfortable, but not for long. If you need a chair in which people might need to sit for any length of time, e.g. a lecture or study session, or a desk chair, you need to provide more adjustment features so they can make themselves more comfortable.
Chairs in which you might expect people to sit in for a period of time need some flex in the back rest, to provide support and allow the sitter to move slightly in comfort. Chairs in which people would expect to sit all day, e.g. an office desk chair, is commonly known as a Task chair. task chairs need to have specific characteristics for adjustment for seat height, seat depth, back height, arms and lumbar support adjustment.
How long do you want it to last?
It's worth remembering that a chair which needs replacement quickly can cost more in the long run than a chair which costs a little more at the start, but lasts much longer. On the other hand, there is no point in spending extra money on a chair which will last much longer than you need.
How much do you want to spend?
You should be able to find a chair that suits your purposes at a price you can afford in one of our collections.
If you take these points into consideration you should be able to select a chair that will give you many years of good
service.
